Edible Greenways Priority Conservation Areas

Oakland, CA

Project Description

As a member of the OFPC Urban Ag workgroup, Catherine Chang assisted the creation of edible greenway mapping within Oakland for ABAG's One Bay Area Priority Conservation Area planning. Community meetings helped shaped the criteria for defining the urban greening zones. The Oakland Food Policy Council recommends communities with a Cal-Enviro Score of 50+ and considered by the USDA as low income with low access to supermarkets to be considered eligible for increased funding for food security and urban greening efforts. The recommendations were accepted by Oakland City Council and subsequently became adopted by ABAG and MTC. Projects within the Urban Greening zones are eligible for carbon cap and trade funding.

This project generated much excitement at the Northern California APA and the International PUARL conferences. Many urban designers and city planners saw this process as a groundbreaking protocol to offer under-privileged communities leadership in urban greening and food security efforts.
