South Prescott USEPA Lead Treatment

Oakland, CA

Project Description

South Prescott, one of the oldest urban neighborhoods in Oakland, has high levels of lead in the soil, posing health risks to the residents. US-EPA Region IX Emergency Response developed an sustainable and economically viable treatment to neutralize the toxicity of lead in-situ by mixing ground fish bone into the soil. We developed a menu of choices for residents to replace their landscapes that were destroyed in the process and providing a green cover to lock in the neutralized lead.  The features illustrate regenerative and sustainable practices and support unique cultural practices to this historical African American neighborhood.
