Project Description
For the City of Hercules, andrews + chang studied the feasibility of a range of appropriately scaled, mixed use building types to anchor the transit hub for the new Hercules BART station. The conceptual designs incorporated a range of patterns, from the urban scale of the "paseos" (pedestrian paths) to the finer grain building scale, including double-aspect units, galleries at the courtyard building, and the second story loggias at the loft buildings. The ground floor retail spaces are flexibly scaled, with a double-height floor plate, capacity for both large and small stores, and shared parking with the residential use. The courtyard types, illustrated above, provide studio, one bedroom and two bedroom apartments with a gallery surround. These units open onto a shared entry and landscaped open space that connects them to the existing paseos.
